What is the 1923 Patch?

The patch is based on the 1923 Escutcheon (Shield), which holds a special place in the history of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, symbolizing a period of significant transformation and growth. This emblem not only represents the fraternity’s enduring values but also marks a pivotal moment in its visual identity.

Historical Background

One of the most dramatic changes to the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Escutcheon occurred in 1923. This redesign is believed to have been influenced by the 10th Grand Conclave held in Atlanta in December 1921, which discussed a revision of the fraternity’s governing regulations, procedures and emblems.

The Redesigned Escutcheon

In December 1923, Bro. Frederick Cornelius Alston of Iota Omega Chapter submitted a new design for the cover of the Oracle. His redesign introduced several changes to the Escutcheon, reflecting the evolving identity of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. This new version of the Escutcheon was used for over 60 years, until the early 1980s, and was prominently featured in “The History of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity” by Bro. Herman Dreer in 1939.
